Metroblogging and Handbraking

It seems like the multi-city blog site Metroblogging is about to launch their Vancouver site.  About a month ago I posted about trying to find people who wanted to blog about what was going on in Vancouver because they want to get about ten people before they launch the city site.  If you're interested they're still looking for a few more people but after getting on their author mail lists it seems like we're ready to go, or almost.

I wish I knew more bloggers in Vancouver, so I could poke and prod them into joining because I think it's going to be a really cool site once it's up and going.  Their original LA site in particular is wicked good and has Wil Wheaton as an author.  On my next day off I'm going to spend sometime grabbing photos of Vancouver to go on the group's Flickr site for use in the page's title bar.

I managed to encode the Battlestar Galactica mini-series with Handbrake and then drop the whole three hour program into my video iPod.  I watched about twenty minutes of it last night in bed and aside from having to wear a pair of headphones, which sucks while laying on a pillow, the experiance is actually pretty good.  One of the nice things about the iPod screen is it's got a very forgiving viewing angle, meaning you can basically be looking at it from any angle and still see the picture fine.

I would still perfer to use the PSP for video but the fact is getting a big enough Sony Memory Stick Pro is too expensive and the iPod is a much nicer size.  It's fairly unobtrusive when I was watching the Digg.com video podcast today on the Skytrain as opposed to the few times I've seen people with PSPs on public transit.

When Beyond Robson launched, I wondered whether Metroblogging would have a Vancouver edition. Since it looks like there will be, it means there will be some healthy competition between Vancouver-based multiple-author weblogs.

If you're looking for more Vancouver-based bloggers, one place to start would be Urban Vancouver's weblog aggregator, which makes one big weblog out of Vancouver-based weblogs. You can sign up for an account there and write directly. No application process, just need to sign up for a username and password and off you go. Feel free to cross-post stuff and link back to the original on your site if you have some thoughts you'd like to share about Vancouver!

Richard:

Yeah they're looking to start up Metroblogs in Vancouver as soon as we get a few more authors signed up. Thanks for the idea finding new writers for the site, but I'm not really wanting to poach people from other places.

But if you know anyone who might be interested, let them know that they can still sign up.

"Thanks for the idea finding new writers for the site, but I'm not really wanting to poach people from other places."

It's possible you misunderstood: they aren't necessarily blogging *for* Urban Vancouver, but their weblogs are syndicated there (that is, 99% of them are independent of Urban Vancouver), so I was just suggesting it as a useful place to look for people who might be interested in Metroblogging (or just to meet fellow Vancouver bloggers). Urban Vancouver doesn't really have a set list of writers--something we're thinking of, surely, but nothing yet set in stone--so feel free to approach anybody that writes either there or on the weblogs we syndicate.

(I might have been better off disclosing this earlier, but I'm an 'editor' of Urban Vancouver, meaning I write for the site and do site gardening & maintenance etc. I'm actually tempted to apply as a writer for Metroblogging ... no, no, I probably write for too many weblogs as it is!)
